Networking Sites

  • LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com) - Has become one of the most popular professional networking sites in the US. Great for finding contacts at target companies based on the principles brought forth in Six Degrees of Separation.
  • Ecademy (www.ecademy.com) - Origins in the UK and Europe but gaining momentum now in the US. Less focused on network linkages and more on forming clubs and long-term relationships, both virtually and physically in various locations.
  • Ryze (www.ryze.com) - More on this one coming.

Career Coaches / Resume Writers

  • Career Masters Institute (www.cminstitute.com) - This is a great place to start when looking for either a Career Coach or Professional Resume Writer. Members of this organization tend to be the best and most professional in the business.

Networking Groups

We're just getting started with this category but stay tuned for more.

Career and Job Search Management Tools

  • JibberJobber (www.jibberjobber.com) - A funny name but a very unique and serious tool. JibberJobber helps you keep track of, and manage your job search but it's more than that. It's really a life-long career management tool that helps you maintain your professional network so that it's there when you need it.

Job Boards

The "big three" are of Monster.com, CareerBuilder.com and HotJobs.com most others a distant fourth. But here are two resources that spider those job boards and others presenting you with a summary of the jobs that fit your search criteria.

  • Indeed (www.indeed.com) - Searches other job boards based on your criteria.
  • Jobster (www.jobster.com) - Searches other job boards based on your criteria.
  • Craig's List (www.craigslist.com) - Craig's List is essentially a low-cost electronic version of the job ad classifieds. No bells or whistles and you have to be careful with what you might find, but many employers are finding this to be a more effective way to recruit! Be prepared to check it frequently as ads only last for about 7 days and the velocity is pretty high.
